Department Leadership

Terry Thompson is the director of Mecklenburg County Internal Audit. He is responsible for establishing the strategic objectives for the Internal Audit function and providing risk and control consultation to executive management and the Board of County Commissioners.  

He joined the County in 2022 as director. Previously, Terry served as head of Internal Audit at organizations such as Alex Lee (parent company for Lowes Foods), Santee Cooper, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) and the University System of Georgia.

Terry holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in accounting and business management from NC State University and a master’s in business administration from UNC Charlotte. He has received his Certified Internal Auditor license and is certified in Risk Management Assurance.
